The Role

Location & Job Details

• Alberta Oil Sands: Fort Hills, Syncrude, and Base Mine operations
• Schedule: 14 days on / 7 days off
• Shift: 12 hours per day
• Shift rotation: Day and night shifts as required
• Typical hours: 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. / 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
• Flights: Provided from Edmonton or Calgary
• Camp: Accommodations and meals provided
• Work environment: High-paced mining and heavy equipment maintenance environment
• Contract duration: Through April 2027
• Physical requirements: Frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, standing, and manual handling; ability to safely lift and carry materials and tools weighing up to 50 lbs.
• Welding truck: Contractor must provide their own fully equipped welding truck
• Tools: Contractor must provide all required welding, fabrication, and hand/power tools
• Insurance: Valid WCB account and minimum $5 million commercial general liability insurance required

Compensation

• $110–$130 per hour, negotiable based on experience, qualifications, equipment, and demonstrated field capability.
• This is a subcontractor position. Contractors are responsible for maintaining all required business registrations, WCB coverage, insurance, equipment, tools, certifications, and other applicable regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Heavy Equipment Welding & Repair

• Perform field welding and fabrication repairs on heavy mining and construction equipment.
• Conduct visual inspections of welded components, structural members, attachments, and high-wear areas to identify cracking, fatigue, excessive wear, distortion, and other defects.
• Complete structural and non-structural repairs in accordance with approved repair procedures, engineering requirements, manufacturer specifications, and site standards.
• Perform welding repairs on haul truck frames and structural components, including preparation, gouging, repair welding, and finishing.
• Complete bucket inspections, repairs, rebuilds, and wear-component repairs as required.
• Repair and modify equipment attachments and structural components subjected to high-impact and high-wear operating conditions.
• Perform ice lugging and track-related welding repairs as required to maintain equipment operating condition.
• Complete repair and fabrication work involving carbon steel and other materials commonly used in heavy equipment applications.

Equipment Modifications & Fabrication

• Install and weld equipment modifications and ancillary components, including:
• Slip tanks
• Warning beacons
• Flood lights
• Mounting brackets
• Guards and protective structures
• Toolboxes and equipment supports
• Miscellaneous site-required modifications
• Perform field fabrication and modification of brackets, supports, guards, structural components, and other equipment-related components.
• Measure, fit, align, tack, and weld components to achieve proper fit-up and structural integrity.
• Perform oxy-fuel cutting, plasma cutting, carbon arc gouging, and other approved metal preparation processes as required.
• Complete pin removal and installation preparation, including gouging and lancing, where required and within the contractor's qualifications and site procedures.
• Use appropriate welding and fabrication techniques based on material type, thickness, component design, and repair requirements.

Welding & Technical Requirements

• Select appropriate welding processes, consumables, amperage/voltage settings, preheat requirements, and welding techniques based on the application and approved procedures.
• Prepare weld surfaces through grinding, gouging, cutting, cleaning, and other required preparation methods.
• Maintain proper weld profiles, penetration, fusion, and overall weld quality.
• Identify welding defects and complete corrective repairs as required.
• Follow applicable CWB requirements, welding procedures, site specifications, equipment manufacturer requirements, and engineering repair procedures.
• Safely operate welding machines, generators, oxy-fuel equipment, plasma cutters, grinders, carbon arc gouging equipment, and associated tools.
• Maintain welding equipment, leads, cylinders, regulators, torches, cables, and other equipment in safe operating condition.
• Ensure welding and cutting activities are performed in accordance with applicable hot work, fire prevention, and site-specific requirements.

Safety & Documentation

• Complete all required field documentation accurately and in a timely manner, including:
• Field Level Hazard Assessments (FLHAs)
• Timesheets
• Equipment and tool pre-use inspections
• Post-use inspections
• Hot work documentation
• Daily work reports
• Repair and inspection records
• Review and understand applicable job procedures, hazard assessments, permits, drawings, welding procedures, and site requirements before commencing work.
• Follow all Kichton, client, mine-site, and regulatory health and safety requirements.
• Immediately report incidents, near misses, equipment damage, unsafe conditions, hazards, and defective equipment to the appropriate Supervisor.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
• Participate actively in toolbox meetings, safety meetings, pre-job planning, and other applicable site meetings.
• Stop work when unsafe conditions are identified and communicate concerns to the appropriate Supervisor.

Education, Qualifications & Training

• Journeyperson Welder certification required.
• Minimum 5 years of relevant field welding experience, preferably in heavy equipment maintenance, mining, Oil Sands, heavy civil, or industrial construction.
• Previous experience welding on large mining and heavy civil equipment is strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated experience with structural welding, equipment repair, fabrication, gouging, and field modifications.
• Current CWB certification required for applicable welding procedures and site requirements.
• Valid Class 5 driver's licence with a satisfactory driver's abstract.
• Strong working knowledge of welding equipment, consumables, cutting equipment, and field fabrication tools.
• Ability to read and interpret welding procedures, equipment drawings, sketches, and repair instructions is considered an asset.
• Ability to complete up to 10 hours of online onboarding and training through applicable systems, including Workday.
• Must be proficient in English, both written and verbal, to safely communicate with Supervisors, Maintenance personnel, Operators, and other site personnel.
• Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
• Comfortable using electronic devices and digital systems for safety documentation, communication, inspections, and training.
• Ability to adapt to evolving technology, equipment, welding processes, and digital work processes.
